Fuzzy Numbers: A TL Stastical Plunge
Our number - crunching Super Computer was scooped by the invaluable Cub Reporter this afternoon, but we're still going to take a stab at some Statistical Fun.
There are some great arguments out there why Ted can't keep up his blistering early season success. Though we hate him with a searing passion and plan to put a bag of flaming pooh on his door step, Frank The Tank, adequately vocalized what many are thinking... fluke. Even the egg heads at Baseball Prospectus are in the mix. While taking a break from their Majic cards, the nerd herd crunched Ted's BABIP (Batting Average on Balls In Play) at an obscenely low .272. What's that mean? It means hitters contact against TL is falling for a hit well below the league average. BABIP is a pretty fricking good stat. We trust BABIP... a lot.
Then why are we still optimistic? Because of this guy. That guy is, of course, former Boston Red Sock Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo was traded into the NL Central early in 2006 (for Friend of The Blog, Wily Mo Pena) and proceeded to dominate, upping his K/9 by almost 2 and dropping his ERA by over a run. He went from battling every night in the AL East to facing the Pirates twelve times a year. We think TL, a better all around pitcher, is going to have similar success.
Listen, Ted Heads. There are going to be some bumps in the road, but most things point to TL have a good, if not great 2007.
